We want pupils to enjoy and love learning about history and to gain knowledge and skills in different ways through experiences in the classroom, fieldwork and educational visits. We help pupils to develop a knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world by asking questions, thinking critically, and using evidence. As a result , they learn to appreciate the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups. This includes their own identity and the challenges of their time.


Pupils learn to understand where they fit in their family and within the community. They have opportunities to talk and ask questions about significant events and family customs and explore how they might differ from their friends. They place these on simple timelines of their life, from birth until present day.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage One, pupils build on their knowledge gained in EYFS. They question, explore and research historical changes during their lifetime and the recent past within the last century. Through practical activities, pupils examine a range of sources which helps them build their understanding of the past and its impact on today. They investigate significant historical events and study people and places in their own area and how they have contributed to national and international achievement.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage Two, our pupils are encouraged to be historians and ask questions to deepen their learning of past events. They use this to then compare their findings with how they live today and the wider world. Pupils are challenged to look at a range of time periods and see where they fit within a timeline. As a result, they learn to make connections and links as they travel through the key stage.

This term Year 6 are learning about a non European society – the Mayan civilisation. We have built a glossary of vocabulary that we will be using throughout the unit and used our mathematical skills of co-ordinates to locate key areas that were important to this ancient civilisation.
